Answering a player's questions rather than walking away and ignoring them aids to smoother game management. Ensuring you are consistently clearing the players before signaling to the bench. As a group all referees needed to use their voice, this would have taken some of the tensions out of the game.

In this way you prevent potential fouls from occurring and players know what your looking at.
